An introduction to Portwest Planet

Portwest Planet is the sustainability programme of global workwear manufacturer, Portwest. Its mission is to provide eco-friendly workwear with no performance compromise while ensuring the safety and well-being of workers at each stage of the supply chain.

One of the key focus areas of the programme is reducing the environmental impact of Portwest’s products. The initiative aims to eliminate all single-use plastics from Portwest’s supply chain by 2025 and ensure that all plastic used is reusable, recyclable or compostable in response to the UK Plastic Pact. Portwest Planet has turned 700,000 PET bottles into fabrics so far.

As part of the Portwest Planet programme, the global brand has developed an eco-friendly workwear range. Across Portwest’s eco range, OEKO-TEX® Level 3 certified textiles are used such as bamboo, which is a carbon-negative material that absorbs more carbon dioxide than it emits and does not require artificial fertilisers to grow. As part of the Cotton Made In Africa (CmiA) initiative, Portwest has also used sustainably sourced cotton within its eco range. This cotton has a lower environmental footprint, produces up to 13% less greenhouse gas emissions and supports approximately one million smallholder farms in Africa.

85% of Portwest’s products hold an OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 label, meaning that the workwear contains no harmful substances. Portwest has also set up fully integrated and proactive environmental management systems, compliant with ISO 14001. Additionally, they have attained the Quality Management Standard (ISO 9001), stipulating that Portwest’s products are of premium standard.
